Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon of the year, made two powerful landfalls on the coast of east China's Zhejiang Province within less than one hour on late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, bringing fierce winds and torrential rain.
The typhoon, with the maximum wind force at its center reaching 40 meters per second when landing, first churned ashore at Yuhuan City, a county-level city administered by the city of Taizhou, before making a second landfall in Yueqing City under the city of Wenzhou at around midnight Sunday.
After the landfalls, the typhoon is expected to continue moving northwestward while weakening.
In both Yuhuan City and Yueqing City, where the typhoon landed, trees were caused to sway violently and water levels rose rapidly. Local authorities have mobilized emergency response teams and remain on high alert for flash floods, urban waterlogging, and geological disasters such as landslides and rockfalls.
As of 14:00, Zhejiang had evacuated over 2.21 million residents to safe locations.
