The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Monday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.28 percent to 101.235 at 15:00 U.S. Eastern Time (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro lost to 1.1387 U.S. dollars from 1.1416 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound dropped to 1.3360 dollars from 1.3398 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 162.36 Japanese yen, lower than 161.69 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 0.8141 Swiss francs from 0.8085 Swiss francs, and it declined to 1.4151 Canadian dollars from 1.4152 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar climbed to 9.7079 Swedish kronor from 9.6638 Swedish kronor.

The death toll from Venezuela's twin earthquakes has risen to 4,561, and 16,740 people were injured, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said Monday.

Rodriguez posted on his social media that 107 temporary camps had been set up and 20,231 people were in those shelters. He also said 17,907 people remained homeless, while 856 buildings had been damaged.

A total of 30,989 Venezuelan personnel, 30,692 volunteers and 2,471 international rescuers were deployed in affected areas, according to the update.

Since the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on June 24, Venezuela has recorded 1,254 aftershocks.
