China resolutely opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that lack backing from international law or authorization by the UN Security Council, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Lin responded to a media query regarding a U.S. bill spearheaded by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, backed by the White House, that allows the country to impose tariffs on China for its normal trade and energy cooperation with other countries, including Russia.

"China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council. China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies and citizens. Adopting double standards and coercion and pressure will only backfire," said the spokesman.
