Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Friday praised the impeccable organization of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the Chinese financial hub he hailed for playing multiple key roles in the world.
Tokayev was addressing the opening ceremony of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance.
Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the ceremony and delivered a keynote speech.
Following Xi's speech, Tokayev and several other world leaders also addressed the event.
"First of all, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to His Honorable Mr. Xi Jinping, president of the People's Republic of China, for the impeccable organization of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference. Today, we gather in Shanghai, this glorious 'Pearl of the Orient'. Over the course of a century of development, this city has consistently played an important role in connecting the world, bringing civilizations together, and pooling wisdom," the Kazakh president said in his speech, using the famous nickname for the Chinese metropolis.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also addressed the ceremony, respectively.
The 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance is being held from Friday to next Monday, bringing together official representatives, business leaders, scholars and researchers from more than 100 countries and international organizations.
