China's telecommunications infrastructure continues to improve steadily, underpinning the rapid expansion of digital services and industrial applications, according a press conference held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Monday in Beijing.
A spokesman of the ministry introduces major progresses in the sector, noting more than 5.1 million 5G base stations across the country have been deployed by the end of June.
"By the end of June, there were 5.102 million 5G base stations and 32.86 million 10G PON ports for gigabit network services [across the country]. Chinese government actively promote the construction of 5G-A networks for business purposes, and realize the pilot deployment of 10 Gbps optical network in residential areas, factories, parks and other scenarios. China's intelligent computing capacity reached 2,185 EFLOPS, a year-on-year increase of 177 percent," said Xie Cun, spokesman for the MIIT and director general of the ministry's Information and Communications Development Department.
"Information and communication technology has deeply empowered the real economy, and more than 80,000 virtual private networks have been built in the 5G industry across the country. The applications of 5G and one Gbps optical network have expanded into 94 major economic sectors, and there are more than 26,000 '5G plus Industrial Internet' projects under construction nationwide, and 1,260 5G factories, each featuring clear classifications and unique operational profiles," he said.
He noted that the overall strength of the telecommunications sector has steadily improved. The variety of 5G-based intelligent terminals continues to expand, with products such as smartphones, computers, robots, AI glasses, and AI toys emerging as new hotspots in information consumption.
"Notable results in attracting and utilizing foreign investment have been recorded as efforts were made to expand pilot programs in opening up of value-added telecommunications services. As of now, the number of foreign-invested telecom enterprises has reached 3,219, up 23.9 percent year on year," said Xie.
