Beijing's high school humanoid football finals wrap up

The inaugural Beijing High School Humanoid Robot Football Tournament wrapped up on Wednesday, capping off a thrilling competition where advanced robotics met teenage ingenuity on the pitch.

Since April, teams of high school students across the Chinese capital prepared tirelessly for the tournament, developing their digital engineering skills as they programmed three humanoid athletes to play as a team and score goals. They utilized the Acceleration Evolution T1, a robot model standing about 1.2 meters tall and designed specifically for educational and competitive robotics.

A total of 55 high schools from Beijing and the Xiongan New Area in north China's Hebei Province also took part in the event, with competing teams divided into two groups before proceeding to the knockout rounds.

An electric atmosphere took hold during the final rounds, held Wednesday at Tsinghua University High School. Competing robots showcased impressive goal-scoring techniques, earning rounds of applause and cheers from the audience.

In the Group A final matchup, the Situo Mecha Team from Beijing No. 4 High School was defeated by the Flag Raiders from Beijing No. 171 Middle School. Despite the loss, the runner-up team valued the experience of reaching the final stages.

"We've enjoyed the entire tournament experience. Whether it was debugging and programming in the early stages or dividing our tasks on the field during the matches, it required very strict coordination and cooperation among us, and we were able to work together seamlessly," said Luan Binglin, captain of the Situo Mecha Team.

Education authorities highlighted the event's unique educational value, noting that the competitive robot football format creates a highly immersive learning environment for young students.

"Robot football matches provide an excellent practical scenario. Driven by curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, the spirit of exploration and competitive drive, students can quickly integrate and apply various skills, allowing them to efficiently master hands-on abilities," said Zhang Yaotian, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission.

Notably, the tournament also acts as a qualifying pathway for elite international youth robot competitions. According to event organizers, winning teams from the finals will be recommended to compete in the U19 category at the World Humanoid Robot Games.

Global trade continued to expand in the first half of 2026 amid rising price pressures, shows the latest Global Trade Update report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Tuesday.

It was reported that global merchandise trade increased by about 12.5 percent to about 13.7 trillion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, while services trade increased by 10.5 percent.

In the six-month period, the combined total of goods and services trade increased by approximately 2 trillion U.S. dollars, and global trade is expected to reach a record high for the entire year.

The report shows that demand for high-tech products such as AI-related products and semiconductors remained strong in the first six months, supporting expansion of global trade.

The UNCTAD said that global trade will still face price pressures, geopolitical tensions, and changes in trade policies.
