Russia said Thursday that its armed forces launched large-scale overnight strikes on Ukrainian targets, while the Ukrainian army claimed on the same day that it repelled Russian attacks in multiple directions over the past 24 hours.
The overnight strikes, launched from land, sea, and air with high-precision, long-range weapons and attack drones, hit Ukrainian military airfields and defense-industrial sites, Russia's Defense Ministry said in its daily briefing.
Over the past day, Russian forces also claimed control over four settlements across the Kharkiv, Sumy and Donetsk regions, the ministry said, adding that Russian troops also continued to strike Ukrainian ports and vessels serving military purposes.
In its own release on the latest developments on the battleground, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported 238 clashes along the front lines in the previous 24 hours.
It said the Ukrainian air force, missile troops, and artillery units conducted strikes against Russian positions and that its troops repelled multiple Russian assaults in the Southern Slobozhanske, Kupiansk and Pokrovsk directions.
In a separate development, the European Commission announced on Thursday that it has disbursed 3.47 billion euros in fresh military funding to support Ukraine's procurement of drones, missiles, air defense systems, and fighter jets, among other military equipment.
The funds are part of a broader 90-billion-euro loan package that the European Union formally approved in April to provide financial and military assistance to Ukraine for the 2026-2027 period, according to the Commission.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed on the same day that Kiev had received the funds.
Russia has repeatedly warned against such military assistance from Western countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has previously cautioned that all Western-supplied weapons destined for Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets for Russian forces.
