Tokyo stocks ended higher Friday driven by hopes that the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep interest rates as they are at its next policy meeting, according to Timothy Pope, an analyst for China Global Television Network (CGTN).
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 405.21 points, or 0.59 percent, at 68,713.80.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished up 21.16 points, or 0.51 percent, at 4,197.20.
The recent release of several U.S. economic indicators for July eased speculation about a possible Fed rate hike, lifting investor sentiment on the Tokyo stock market, said Pope.
"Over in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was up 0.6 percent. That was buoyed up by some hopes that the U.S. Fed will hold interest rates steady at its next meeting. That comes after the latest producer price data hit the markets overnight. That supported risk appetite a bit among Japanese investors so we saw Nintendo, one of the top gainers, up almost 7 percent," he said.
