A key interchange on Shanghai's Zhou-Deng Expressway saw the installation of its first steel box girder over a local metro line completed on Saturday, marking a major milestone in the project's final construction sprint.

To guarantee uninterrupted passenger transport operations on Metro Line 16, the installation was carried out during the metro line's non-service hours, with a time window of only two and a half hours. Engineers used digital simulations in advance to optimize the construction, allowing the complex task to be finished within the time limit.

According to project management officials, the interchange linking the Zhou-Deng Expressway and the S3 Highway is one of the most technically demanding control points on the entire line, requiring eight such installation operations which also involve high-profile diffult hoisting of parts and components over Metro Line 16.

The 17.2-kilometer Zhou-Deng Expressway in Pudong New Area runs through surrounding towns, and connects with the Shanghai Ring Expressway. Now in the final stages of construction, the soon-to-be expressway is expected to directly link the Shanghai East Railway Station with the Pudong International Airport to facilitate interregional transition.
