A humanoid robot innovation center in east China's Fujian Province is preparing for pre-competition training ahead of the 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games, which will take place in Beijing from August 22 to 26, with the center's 3D-printed robots set to compete in multiple scenario-based events.

The Fujian Humanoid Robot Innovation Center is the only team from Fujian to participate in the competition, and their specialty lies in flexible arm movements. The company has signed up for multiple scenario-based events at this year's games.

In the training, engineers wear exoskeletons to remotely control dozens of robots and train coordinated movements of arms and fingers.

The robot model set to compete in this year's games is named Fu Zhi. Since it will compete in scenario-based events, it adopts a wheel-arm structure. The robot features an innovative lightweight design using 3D printing, with its total weight roughly equivalent to that of just two joints of a conventional humanoid robot.

The idea of using a 3D-printed lightweight design came from young AI engineers from China's Taiwan region on the team.

Using ordinary high-strength engineering plastics and optimized structural design, the team significantly reduced the robot's weight while ensuring structural rigidity. This not only lowered energy consumption during operation but also greatly improved the mobility and endurance of the wheeled chassis.

"Our partners from the Taiwan region have also been deeply involved in refining the underlying algorithms for motion control and environmental perception, closely integrating Taiwan's technological advantages in precision mechatronics with the mainland's rich scenario data. Every precise and efficient movement and grab made by the Fu Zhi robot embodies the collaborative innovation of young people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait," said Lin Qi, head of Fujian Humanoid Robot Innovation Center Co., Ltd.

Scenario-based events test a robot's adaptability and stability in complex and dynamic environments. To continuously improve Fu Zhi's autonomous decision-making and fine manipulation capabilities, the team has set up multiple embodied intelligence data collection and training centers, and conducts regular real-world testing at Fuzhou's subway stations to accumulate experience for the robot.

"We hope that through this international competition, we can learn from more domestic and international teams and bring good experience back to Fujian. At the same time, we hope to achieve technological iteration for our own products and truly accelerate the application of robots in all industries," Lin said.

The 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games will bring together 666 teams and 2,056 robots, a 138 percent increase in team numbers compared with the inaugural edition in 2025.

The five-day program includes 30 competitive events spanning ball games and combat categories, plus 21 scenario-based challenges covering industrial assembly and home services.

The first World Humanoid Robot Games, held in August 2025, attracted 280 teams and over 500 humanoid robots from 16 countries.

China's summer movie season is gaining momentum as a diverse lineup of domestic and imported films draws moviegoers across the country, with the total box office revenue surpassing 10.1 billion yuan (some 1.49 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday morning.

Domestic productions have taken the lead, with sports comedy film "Kung Fu Soccer," animated fantasy-comedy "All Wishes Come True" and anti-war film "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East" ranking among the top-grossing titles.

Their strong performance reflects growing audience demand for quality domestic films, while imported releases such as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey" are adding further variety to the market.

This year's summer lineup covers a broad range of genres, including comedy, animation, sci-fi, war, suspense and action, offering audiences more choices and helping attract viewers from different age groups and with different interests.

"Since the beginning of August, a variety of domestic and international blockbusters have been released, and he moviegoer traffic has nearly doubled compared with July. The sales of film-related merchandise, themed derivative items, and even popcorn as a film-watching snack, have also increased significantly," said Bai Hang, a duty manager at a cinema in eastern Beijing's Chaoyang District.

According to film data platform Lighthouse as of Sunday, the summer box office had risen 3.2 percent year on year, while the number of moviegoer visits reached 274 million, up 5.7 percent from the previous year's corresponding period.

Chen Tao, vice dean of the School of Liberal Arts at the Renmin University of China, said that high-quality domestic productions have played a particularly important role this summer, with strong word of mouth helping turn quality content into audience demand.

This year's summer movie season runs through August 31.
