SEE attends APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting in Hangzhou

The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, today (August 25) attended the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) in Hangzhou. This year, APEC China has adopted the theme "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together". The FSMM discussed advancing high-quality agricultural and rural development across the region, as well as leveraging agricultural science, technological innovation and digital transformation to address pressing food security challenges, and to strengthen the foundation for shared prosperity.

Speaking at the discussion session on Work Towards High Quality Agricultural and Rural Development in the Asia-Pacific Region, Mr Tse said Hong Kong has promulgated a blueprint for the sustainable development of agriculture and fisheries with a series of active programmes. The goal is to assist the modernisation and intensification of local agricultural and fisheries production to raise both output volume and value, as well as to support the long-term sustainability of farming communities.

Mr Tse said Hong Kong has established an Agricultural Park to nurture agro-technology and modern farm management knowledge. A Modernised Techno-Agricultural Park has also been set up through public-private partnership to support the development of modern commercial farming.

Mr Tse further said that Hong Kong's first modernised and environmentally-friendly multi-storey pig farm is targeted for completion around 2032. The project will employ automated, climate-controlled, digitally managed and AI-assisted systems, offering a replicable model for economies facing similar land constraints.

Mr Tse highlighted that Hong Kong has recently launched a new unified brand for local agricultural and fisheries products, Hong Kong Harvest, to certify local agricultural and fisheries products that meet rigorous safety, quality and traceability requirements. The brand will enhance market competitiveness and build consumer confidence to increase farmers' incomes and attract younger talent to join the industry.

Speaking at another discussion session on Food Security Empowered by Technological Innovation and Digital Agriculture, Mr Tse said Hong Kong has been actively promoting the modernisation and sustainable development of local agriculture through technology adoption to enhance productivity, strengthen climate resilience and reduce reliance on labour. Hong Kong has also been promoting urban farming in a multipronged manner.

Mr Tse said Hong Kong will continue to exchange and co-operate with APEC member economies to jointly advance agricultural innovation, strengthen food security and promote shared prosperity in the region.

Mr Tse will arrive in Hong Kong tonight.

Working Group on Patriotic Education organises study tour on aerospace technology in Hainan

The Working Group on Patriotic Education (WGPE) under the Constitution and Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee organised a three-day study tour on aerospace technology to Wenchang and Haikou in Hainan from August 23 to 25. Led by the Convenor of the WGPE, Dr Eliza Chan, the delegation comprised members of the Media Publicity Sub-group of the WGPE Ms Cally Kwong, Mr Lee Luen-fai and Dr James Li, the Director of Information Services, Mr John Tse, more than 20 representatives from various local media organisations, and post-secondary journalism students. The delegation visited various aerospace sites to learn about the country's robust aerospace development, and toured a patriotic education base in Haikou to deepen their understanding of the country's revolutionary history.

The delegation visited the Hainan Chang Guang Satellite Information Technology Company Limited on August 23 to learn about developments in the satellite industry, and to enhance their awareness of the key strategies to develop a modernised industrial system and expedite the development of the country into an aerospace power.

The delegation yesterday (August 24) visited the Hainan Aerospace Shenzhou Science and Technology Museum. Through interactive exhibits and aerospace models at the museum, they further strengthened their understanding of the national aerospace technology's latest development.

The delegation then visited the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site to learn more about the advancement of the commercial space industry. In the afternoon, they proceeded to the Wenchang Aerospace Supercomputing Center to explore space computing and meteorite science.

As this year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the delegation this morning (August 25) specifically visited a patriotic education base in Hainan Province - the former site of the First Qiongya Congress of the CPC. The visit enabled the delegation to gain a better understanding of the historical background and the profound significance of the Qiongya Revolution.

Dr Chan remarked that the study tour visited various aerospace enterprises and sites, provided valuable opportunities to the delegates to learn deeply about the country's strategic planning for advanced aerospace science from multiple perspectives, and aimed to boost the society's national pride and patriotic sentiment through reports from media. The WGPE will continue to collaborate closely with frontline media sectors and organise various activities to jointly promote patriotic education, facilitating the dissemination of information on the country's development from different perspectives. The WGPE also hopes that media practitioners will continue to uphold professionalism and produce in-depth and impactful reports to tell the public the good stories of the country and Hong Kong.
