19 Community Halls Open as Temporary Heat Shelters Amid Very Hot Weather Warning

HAD opens temporary heat shelters

The Home Affairs Department is opening 19 community halls/community centres as temporary heat shelters today (August 29).

The Home Affairs Department and the District Offices review from time to time the arrangements of heat shelters with a view to enhancing their services. A series of service enhancement measures have been introduced this year, including strengthening the cooling and ventilation facilities, providing drinking water dispensers which are more easily accessible, offering personal cooling items, providing more comfortable rest areas and improving the female zone, while food items that cater for the dietary needs of ethnic minorities are even provided in certain heat shelters, so as to provide more comprehensive services for users of heat shelters.

The temporary heat shelters will remain open for people to take refuge from the heat when the Very Hot Weather Warning is in force. From 10.30pm to 8am the next day, the temporary heat shelters will also provide bedding and a sleeping place for people in need. The shelters are manned by duty attendants.

CAS Cadet Corps holds 155th Cadets Passing-out Parade

The Civil Aid Service (CAS) Cadet Corps held the 155th Cadets Passing-out Parade at the CAS Headquarters today (August 29). Nearly 70 cadets participated in the parade. The parade was reviewed by the Commissioner of the CAS, Mr Victor Pang.

Speaking at the parade, Mr Pang congratulated all the new cadets on completing their training. He said that the CAS has always encouraged its members to take part in wholesome activities and training programmes, which not only equip cadets with practical skills and leadership abilities, but also build their confidence and sense of responsibility. More importantly, these programmes foster among cadets the spirit of self-discipline and self-improvement, unleashing potential, broadening horizons, benefiting the community, and nurturing generations of leaders dedicated to serving society.

Regarding the promotion of national security education, Mr Pang said the CAS has always placed great emphasis on youth development and the passing on of values. This year, the CAS Cadet Corps organised a number of exchange activities in the Chinese Mainland, Macao and overseas, with more than 300 participants visiting Jiuquan, Beijing, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Hunan, Zhejiang, and Singapore, among other places, to gain first-hand experience of the nation's development. These activities enabled the youngsters to deepen their understanding of the Motherland's culture and appreciate the importance of safeguarding national security, thereby fostering their commitment to loving the country and Hong Kong, and to serving the community.

Mr Pang added 38 cadets had completed training and been appointed as National Security Youth Ambassadors. They would promote national security messages within the CAS and among cadets, and provide guided tours of the National Security Exhibition Gallery, further embedding national security education among the younger generation. Looking ahead, the number of National Security Youth Ambassadors trained by the CAS would continue to grow steadily, and they would contribute more actively to the promotion of national security.
