Hit shows, apart from serving as a cultural feast, have become massive tourism traffic drivers across China, according to a press conference held on Thursday.
Good television series are an important tourism promotion channel for shooting locations, as fans flock to those real-life places to take photos or re-create the iconic scenes for themselves.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, an official with the National Radio and Television Administration said that great TV dramas can serve as major attention magnets, empowering various industries. He described outstanding literary and artistic works as the “ballast” of premium content creation and the “load-bearing wall” of audiovisual arts, calling them “sumptuous meals” that satisfy people’s spiritual and cultural needs.
"A good TV drama is a huge attention magnet, capable of empowering all kinds of industries. Swords into Plowshares boosted tourism routes of the Wuyue culture (regional Chinese culture of the Wuyue people). And bookings for travel routes to the filming locations of Born to Be Alive surged. There are many such examples. It can be said that 'traveling by following TV dramas' has become a fashion trend. A broad consensus is that a single drama can turn a city, or even an industry, into a hot sensation. We should not only jointly create high-quality products in radio and television in China, but also share the value of good dramas in everyday life, so that TV dramas remain in the hearts of viewers and, more importantly, enter the lives of the people," said Feng Shengyong, director of the television drama department at the National Radio and Television Administration.
Feng also said China plans to launch approximately 100 high-quality TV series and internet dramas during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030).
