China opposes long-arm jurisdiction without a basis in international law or authorization from the United Nations Security Council, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Thursday, pushing back against a U.S. sanctions bill targeting buyers of Russian oil and gas. Guo made the remarks at a regular press briefing when asked about the U.S. House of Representatives passing a sanctions bill against Russia Wednesday that would authorize President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, with potential targets including China.

"China has always engaged in normal economic and trade cooperation with the rest of the world on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. Such cooperation targets no third party and is not subject to interference or coercion by any third party. We oppose long-arm jurisdiction that lacks a basis in international law and has not been authorized by the UN Security Council," said Guo.
