Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from Sept 23 to 25 at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman announced on Monday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun briefed reporters on Xi's upcoming visit at a press conference later on Monday.

"At the invitation of U.S. President Trump, President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States. During the visit, President Xi Jinping and President Trump will have in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations, and major issues concerning world peace and development. Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance to China-U.S. relations. The exchange of visits between the leaders of the two countries within half a year is of historic and milestone significance," Guo said.

"China is willing to work with the United States to enrich the substance of the constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences, deliver more benefits to the people of the two countries, and promote world peace, stability and prosperity," he added.

Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.97 percent to 3,949.91 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.65 percent higher at 13,730.02 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at around 2.03 trillion yuan (about 300.8 billion U.S. dollars), down from 2.08 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Medical services, cellular immunotherapy and recombinant protein stocks were among the top gainers, while precious metals and photolithography equipment shares led the declines.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.8 percent to close at 3,399.59 points Monday.

The ChiNext Index, together with the Shenzhen Component Index and other indices, reflects the performance of stocks listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
