Global observers are closely watching Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming state visit to the United States for signs that U.S.-China relations will develop in a healthy, stable and sustainable way and deliver greater peace, prosperity and progress to the world.
Daniel Balazs, a senior research analyst at the Institute for China-Europe Studies (ICES), said that the "four stabilities" proposed by Xi for China-U.S. relations were of great significance. Xi's "four stabilities" are: positive stability with cooperation as the mainstay, healthy stability with competition within proper limits, constant stability with manageable differences, and lasting stability with expectable peace.
"I think President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States will have an opportunity to consolidate and turn the constructive strategic stability into actionable outcomes. In the longer term, they have the opportunity to agree on specific mechanisms on trade and investment and AI governance, possibly even critical technology, to facilitate the deepening of U.S.-China relations and therefore contribute to global stability. I think these proposals that were proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping are very important. I think overall, even if you look at these four proposals that were put forward by President Xi Jinping, we can see that the core emphasis is still on cooperation, stability and peace. So overall, it's a forward-looking, constructive set of proposals," said Balazs.
Dhoihir Dhoulkamal, former minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation of The Comoros, said the upcoming meeting between the Chinese and U.S. presidents could help improve the "international situation".
"This meeting is something to welcome -- after all, it's a dialogue between two major powers and two leaders with considerable influence over international affairs. If both sides can reach consensus, it will help move the international situation in a positive direction. I think the approach President Xi has adopted is consistent and constructive. I think the 'four stabilities' initiative is worthy of praise. If efforts continue along this path, I believe the world will get better. We also hope that through such efforts, the difficulties now facing us and the world can be resolved, and that new solutions will keep emerging -- so that all countries, including the United States and China, can live together in harmony and expand exchanges in a peaceful, harmonious atmosphere," he said.
Firas Naeb, head of the Strategic Center for Studies in Dubai, said stable relations between the U.S. and China were crucial for global stability.
"To be frank, Chinese President Xi Jinping is a man of principle who has always held firm to his convictions. He is committed to achieving world peace and promoting coordination among major powers, including stronger coordination between China and the U.S. as well as among all major countries. His earlier proposals on global governance were aimed at promoting the coordinated development of international relations and preventing tension and conflict. He has consistently upheld these important propositions. What remains to be seen is how the United States will respond to them, and how the two sides can seek solutions and compromises between their respective positions and visions. Whenever the Chinese and U.S. heads of state hold such a summit, it is of vital importance for safeguarding global stability and easing tensions around the world. Coordination between China and the United States is crucial," he said.
