Finding a solution to the conflict in the Middle East will require diplomacy and dialogue between the major world powers, said Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, a UN specialized agency.
The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting disruptions to the world's oil supply have left the global maritime sector scrambling for solutions but finding that options are limited.
In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Dominguez emphasized that a solution must ultimately come from world leadership. In light of that requirement, he spoke positively about Chinese President Xi Jinping's just-concluded U.S. state visit, saying the two major countries each have a role to play in the conflict's resolution.
"How to bring this conflict to an end? Both parties have a lot of influence. Both parties are also being affected by these different conflicts, and they are leaders around the world. They can actually take the necessary steps together with all the countries that are ready to be intermediate, that negotiate, that are happy to assist in order to come to those solutions," he said.
"Because there are difference of opinions. We all understand that, but that's why the United Nations exists. That's why countries practice multilateralism, diplomacy, dialogue. Because that's the way that they are going to come to agreements into how not only to protect both countries, but to protect the world, and they get the benefits from all that. The longer that this conflict goes on, the more that we see the negative effects on every single person around the world," said Dominguez.
From Wednesday to Friday, Xi paid a state visit to the United States. During the visit, the two heads of state held in-depth discussions on bilateral relations as well as major international and regional issues.
In his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, Xi said China has always believed that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected, and has consistently played a constructive role in easing tensions and de-escalation.
China has encouraged relevant parties to stay committed to peaceful solutions and maintain the momentum of talks, Xi said.
The Chinese president also voiced the hope that the U.S. and Iran will ultimately reach a comprehensive agreement covering the nuclear issue and other matters, and achieve peace at an early date.
