Chinese shares close lower Monday

Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.67 percent to 3,823.62 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 3.44 percent lower at 12,858.75 points.

Turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled about 1.7 trillion yuan (about 252.2 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.65 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Auto and wind power equipment shares led the gains, while precious metals and consumer electronics stocks were among the biggest decliners.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 4.53 percent to close at 3,139.82 points.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 4.31 percent lower at 1,836.09 points.

Hong Kong's stock market ended higher Monday, with the benchmark Hang Seng Index up 0.54 percent to close at 24,642.51 points.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 0.63 percent to end at 8,216.84 points, and the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.37 percent to end at 4,296 points.
