Drone shows, fireworks, illuminated skylines and traditional performances drew crowds across China as a seven-day National Day public holiday began on Thursday, marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
In Nanchang, the capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, 5,000 drones rose above the Ganjiang River and formed images of military aircraft flying in formation, the words "I Love You, China," and Tengwang Pavilion, one of the city's best-known historic landmarks, as fireworks burst overhead.
"It was absolutely breathtaking. When the first firework burst and people around me cheered, I was filled with pride and affection for my country. I wish our country prosperous and stronger," said a visitor Ning Meng.
In Jinan, the capital east China's Shandong Province, national flags and holiday greetings were projected onto high-rise buildings, while light trails from incessant traffic weave together with architectural glows, outlining the majestic skyline of a modern city.
"I came with friends especially to see the show, and it was spectacular. I sincerely hope our country prosper and grow stronger," said Jinan resident Wang Liyan.
The celebrations also put local traditions in the spotlight. At the Minnan Water Town cultural district in Zhangzhou City, east China's Fujian Province, lights illuminated buildings featuring traditional southern Fujian architecture as folk performances unfolded.
Performers staged dragon dances and Zhangzhou glove-puppet shows, including a puppet whirling long silk ribbons through the air and another portraying Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, spinning his magical staff.
Visitors also strolled along the river, sampled local food and browsed locally designed souvenirs.
"The festive atmosphere is wonderful, and the performances are very exciting. They incorporate elements of Zhangzhou's local culture, which makes the experience especially meaningful," said resident He Yiping.
Similar drone shows were staged in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. More than 1,000 drones formed changing patterns above Wulanmulun Lake in Ordos' Kangbashi District, while another 2,000 drones formed images and displayed messages celebrating National Day and wishing the country peace and prosperity over Xuejiawan Town in Jungar Banner.
