China is preparing for a nationwide surge in return travel on Tuesday as the week-long National Day holiday enters its final days, with transportation departments boosting capacity and services to ensure smooth journeys home.
With Tuesday marking the penultimate day of the holiday, the country's railway system is expected to handle 22.1 million passenger trips, with an additional 2,199 train services scheduled to cope with the demand. Railway authorities have moved quickly to expand capacity in response to rising passenger numbers. On road transportation, inbound routes into major cities and key interprovincial return corridors are under heavier pressure. Transport authorities are coordinating traffic based on vehicle flow data and, in coordination with navigation apps and highway LED screens, issuing travel advisories.
China's civil aviation sector is expected to handle 2.5 million passenger trips on Tuesday. Popular routes include Shenzhen to Shanghai, Beijing, and Hangzhou, as well as Shanghai to Guangzhou and Beijing. Waterway passenger numbers are also on the rise, with 1.39 million trips expected on the same day, up 25.3 percent year on year. On popular water routes in Shanghai, Chongqing, Zhejiang and Guangdong, maritime authorities are utilizing smart systems to monitor safety risks such as overloading and hazardous navigation, while dispatching law enforcement personnel to accompany voyages and ensure safe water transport.
