President of the Republic of Botswana Duma Gideon Boko arrived in Beijing on Tuesday to begin his state visit to China from October 12 to 17 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
This is President Boko's first state visit to China since he took office in November 2024. During his stay in Beijing, President Xi will host a welcoming ceremony and a banquet for President Boko, and the two heads of state will hold talks. Premier Li Qiang and Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee Zhao Leji will meet with him respectively. President Boko will also visit eat China's Fujian Province as part of his agenda, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry last week.
China and Botswana established diplomatic relations in 1975, and the two countries elevated their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership in September 2024. In January 2025, Xi and Boko exchanged congratulations on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, expressing confidence in the prospects for closer cooperation. Beyond these diplomatic milestones, cooperation between both countries has taken shape in projects ranging from energy and mining to education and health care.
