China's National Immigration Administration (NIA) on Tuesday reported the sector's performance in the third quarter of this year, highlighting intensified crackdowns on crimes obstructing national border control, alongside drug trafficking and smuggling in border regions.
At a press conference in Beijing, Lyu Ning, NIA's spokeswoman, briefed the media on the nationwide law enforcement efforts against such offenses during the period.
In the third quarter, immigration authorities across the country investigated 4,432 cases of crimes that impaired national border control, arresting over 12,000 suspects, dismantling 100 major criminal syndicates, and overseeing the investigation of 66 major cases.
In addition, the authorities cracked down on gun and explosive-related crimes, drug trafficking, and smuggling at ports and along borders, solving 110 drug-related cases, arresting 123 suspects, and seizing 1.88 tons of illegal drugs, according to the spokeswoman.
"In the third quarter, we kept a close eye on the regional and regular characteristics of crimes obstructing border control. We focused on prominent issues such as organizing Chinese citizens to illegally exit the country for telecom and online fraud, as well as organizing foreigners to enter China illegally for employment. We launched a new round of special fugitive-apprehension campaigns, carried out targeted rectifications in key border areas and illegal immigration agencies, and strengthened cross-border law enforcement cooperation with key countries and regions to maintain order in international travel and border control," Lyu said.
