One year after US President Donald Trump declared an end to the war in Gaza, Israeli attacks continue on the coastal enclave, raising questions about the future of the US-brokered ceasefire.
Amid flames and rubble, little Maryam Ghanem's cries led rescuers to her inside a burning apartment struck by an Israeli airstrike in western Gaza City last week.
Her father was killed in November 2023, before she was born. Now, the latest attack has also taken her mother, leaving the injured child orphaned and receiving treatment at Al-Shifa Hospital.
"There is no ceasefire. Every day, at every moment, we hear bombing, destruction and killings. We want to live in peace, but there is no safety. It feels as though the war has just begun," said Um Ahmed Ghanem, the grandmother of the injured Palestinian child.
In eastern Gaza City, Israeli military movements near the so-called Yellow Line have forced more families to flee. Deeb Al-Fayoumi is among those displaced from Shuja'iyya as Israeli forces expand their positions.
"They claim there is a ceasefire, but that is not true. Yesterday, we fled Shuja'iyya after my wife was injured. I feared something worse would happen to my children, so we left when the Yellow Line reached our tents," said Deeb Al-Fayoumi, a displaced Palestinian.
According to Gaza's Health Ministry, more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed and over 5,300 injured since the ceasefire began a year ago, while emergency services face severe shortages of fuel and spare parts.
"Israeli forces continue to attack pedestrians, buildings, and residential apartments. Sadly, large numbers of children, women, and elderly people have been killed over the past year," said Fares Afana, director of Ambulance and Medical Services in Gaza.
The United Nations has warned of renewed war in Gaza, where reconstruction remains stalled and thousands of displaced families continue living in overcrowded shelters, with limited access to water and basic services.
One year after Washington declared the war over, peace remains out of reach for many Palestinians in Gaza, where continued Israeli attacks and displacement make survival a daily struggle.
