The over 19,000 hectares of desert poplar forests in Makit County of Kashgar Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have entered the best viewing season of the year, drawing visitors to the magnificent autumn scenery.
Standing on the southwestern edge of the Taklimakan, China's largest and the world's second-largest drifting desert, the forests have turned a brilliant gold as the day-night temperature gap widens, forming a striking contrast with the surrounding sand and the clear river waters.
The desert poplar is a rugged species of tree, known as "guardian of the desert". It is resistant to low temperatures, drought and saline-alkali soil, and serves as an ideal windbreak and sand-fixation plant.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday said China is willing to work with countries around the world to make unremitting efforts to help build a more just and reasonable global governance system.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while attending the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiongan).
Wang read out a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping and delivered a keynote speech.
The world is undergoing accelerated transformation unseen in a century, and the deficits in peace, development, security and governance are growing rather than diminishing, Xi said in the letter.
"I have put forward the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) to promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system and a better world," Xi said.
China stands ready to work with all parties to uphold the vision of global governance featuring extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, pool strength through confidence-building and tackle challenges through cooperation, Xi said.
After reading the letter, Wang said that a year ago, in a historic move, President Xi put forward the GGI, offering a solution of the times to address the governance deficit and jointly create a better future.
Over the past year, the contemporary significance of this initiative has become increasingly apparent, and international expectations for China to play a greater role have grown ever stronger, Wang said.
We should take on responsibility more actively and pursue more vigorous action to steadily advance the blueprint envisioned in the GGI and turn it into reality, he said.
We should work together to uphold the central role of the United Nations, safeguard the values of fairness and justice, boost the strength of the Global South in global governance, remain committed to the right path of open development, and improve the rules of governance for emerging fields, Wang said.

The forum opened in Xiong’an New Area, north China's Hebei Province. Hosted by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, it is being held under the theme "Rebuilding Confidence and Cooperation: Reforming and Improving Global Governance in a Transforming World."
