China will soon send special envoys to the Middle East, the Gulf region, the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa to strengthen communication and promote dialogue, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said in Beijing on Tuesday.

Guo said China closely follows the developments in the above-mentioned regions and is committed to promoting peace talks, when answering to a query at a daily news briefing about possible escalation of tensions in the regions.

"China closely follows the developments in the Middle East, the Gulf region, the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, and expresses deep concerns over the protracted conflicts and their spillover effects. We call on relevant parties to resolve their disputes through dialogue and negotiation, and realize lasting ceasefire and cessation of hostilities at an early date. China is committed to promoting peace talks. Our special envoys will soon travel to regional countries to strengthen communication with the relevant parties and promote engagement, dialogue and deescalation to prevent the worsening of the situation," said Guo.

"Guided by the initiatives and propositions put forward by President Xi Jinping on promoting peace and security in the Middle East, China will work together with the international community to make unremitting efforts for the early realization of peace and stability in relevant regions," Guo added.

China on Tuesday called on the United States to immediately cease its blockade of and pressure on Cuba and end all unilateral sanctions against the country.

The United Nations General Assembly opened its annual debate on the draft resolution entitled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba". Fu said the United States' illegal economic blockade and unilateral economic sanctions against Cuba had lasted for more than 60 years and continued to intensify.

The General Assembly had discussed the issue for 34 times since 1992, yet the relevant resolutions remained unimplemented, he said.

Fu said China will vote in favor of resolutions condemning the U.S. anti-Cuba actions.

"Today, standing at the solemn podium of the United Nations, China once again firmly demands that the United States immediately cease its blockade of and pressure on Cuba. There is no justification for the continuation of the 64 years of illegal, unilateral sanctions. There is no reason for 34 years' calls for justice to be set aside any longer. The resolution calling for an end to the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba must be implemented immediately. Based on this position, China will once again cast a resolute vote in favor of the draft resolution submitted by Cuba urging the United States to end its economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba," said Fu.

Fu further pointed out that Cuba's future must be determined independently by the Cuban people. No country has the right to impose sanctions or military threats upon Cuba, or to exert pressure through the abuse of judicial processes.

Noting that unilateral sanctions imposed without the authorization of the UN Security Council have no basis in international law, Fu said the international community should work collectively to remove Cuba from the "state sponsors of terrorism" list and uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law.
