CPC's governance experience a model for world: British scholar

The Communist Party of China (CPC) represents an advanced model of national governance that Western countries will need to learn from as China's development continues, said a British scholar.

Martin Jacques, a former senior fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies, Cambridge University, made the remarks in a recent video interview with China Radio International (CRI). The interview took place ahead of the CPC Central Committee's fifth plenary session in Beijing in late October, where plans were set out to preserve with full and rigorous Party self-governance.

Jacques said that China's development practice since the founding of the People's Republic of China has fully proven the advantages of the CPC's governance model.

"The core of the Chinese state and governance is the Communist Party. And I would suggest, everything we've seen since 1949 and the transformation of China, suggests that the Chinese Communist Party is a very advanced form of governance. It thinks long term, it thinks deeply, it's able to move with the times, it thinks a lot about the future and where China needs to go. And this is governing a country of 1.4 billion people, this is an extraordinary achievement. Parties in the West don't have a long-term perspective, they have a very short-term perspective. So the Chinese Communist Party is a very, very different kind of governing party to those that exist in the West," he said.

Amid a turbulent and increasingly uncertain world, China has demonstrated strong development resilience and enormous development potential under the leadership of the CPC, the political scholar observed. These achievements, he said, have steadily enhanced China's influence in the international community, especially among developing countries.

"And I think one of the things that we'll see over the coming decades is the growing reputation of the Chinese Communist Party across the world. Now I think that's already happened very significantly, especially in the developing world, where they look to the Communist Party for a sense of the future and what the possible relationships that can exist and it can develop between their country and China. And I think that this will have, over time, a very big impact on other countries and other peoples," he said.

Jacques stressed that in the long run, even more developed countries will take lessons from the CPC's concepts of national governance in many aspects.

"I think that the fact that China, the Chinese Communist Party, has extraordinary experience of governing has meant that it has a sense of society and a sense of the future, in a way that no Western political party has," the scholar said.

Having gone through what he called "a really poor performance" of governance in recent years, Western countries "will have to learn from" the success of China in the coming years, he added.

"I mean, China has outperformed them so much and they're finding it very difficult to cope with. So I think in the long-term as much that the West should learn, can learn and overtime probably will, up to a point, learn from China," he said.

China's homegrown C919 passenger jet completed its first flight powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area on Friday.

It was the first SAF flight from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong Province, and the first time the Greater Bay Area in south China has used the homegrown C919 for SAF flights.

SAF is an alternative to conventional aviation fuel. It refers to fuel made from used cooking oil, biomass waste and residues, and energy crops. SAF can significantly reduce lifecycle carbon emissions, typically by around 80 percent compared with conventional aviation fuel.
