An oil tanker operating in a restricted and unsafe area of the eastern Strait of Hormuz struck a naval mine and caught fire, Iran's navy said on Monday, adding that the vessel had turned off its navigation systems.
The Public Relations Department of the Iranian Navy said tanker owners should learn from the fate of what it called errant vessels that switch off their identification systems and try to pass through restricted areas.
The vessel operators should be aware that unauthorized travel in high-risk areas can lead to collisions with naval mines and fires, it said in a statement.
