Following the connection of a new wind farm to the grid, the installed capacity of new energy in northwest China's Xinjiang exceeded 100 million kW on Monday, with the newly added capacity this year ranking first in the country, according to the State Grid Corporation of China.

As the second phase of the Shagehuang project on the Yushan Wind Farm in Hami was completed and connected to the grid, Xinjiang's new energy installed capacity now accounts for 55 percent of the autonomous region's total installed power capacity, topping any other energy sources to become the largest power source in the region.

Leveraging its abundant wind and solar resources and geographical advantages, Xinjiang has remarkably advanced its clean energy infrastructure. In 2024 alone, the region's newly installed capacity ranks first in China, claiming its significant achievements in clean energy development.

"By far, Xinjiang has built three 10-million-kW class new energy bases in Urumqi, Changji and Hami cities, and a dozen million-kW class ones. As of December 30, Xinjiang's newly installed new energy capacity this year had reached 35.57 million kW, ranking first in the country," said Zhu Qing, head of the Dispatching and Control Division at the State Grid Xinjiang Power Dispatching Center.

Xinjiang has accelerated power grid construction this year, with 13 power transmission and transformation projects of 750 kV completed and put into operation. The construction of the third ultra-high voltage power transmission passage to deliver electricity from Xinjiang to other parts of China has also been hastened. By the end of November 2024, Xinjiang had cumulatively transmitted more than 850 billion kWh of electricity out of the region, of which new energy accounted for 30 percent. The electricity was transmitted to 22 provinces across the country, with the consumption reaching 107.95 billion kWh, a record high.

With a fast-paced green and low-carbon transformation, Xinjiang is becoming China's largest new energy delivery base.

The Trump administration has initiated procedures to pay 725 million U.S. dollars toward U.S. arrears owed to the United Nations, according to a State Department notification to Congress on Thursday.

The payment is expected to be completed before President Trump travels to New York next month to attend the UN General Assembly and deliver an address.

However, the 725 million U.S. dollars represents less than 20 percent of the total amount the United States owes.

In May, the United Nations said U.S. arrears exceeded 4 billion U.S. dollars. The U.S. side maintains that the actual total is lower than that figure.

Under the UN Charter, a member state may lose its voting rights in the General Assembly if its arrears equal or exceed the total assessments due for the preceding two years.

The United States is the largest contributor to the UN budget. The Trump administration had previously refused to pay some mandatory assessments for the UN regular budget and peacekeeping budget, cut voluntary funding to multiple UN agencies, and withdrawn from several international organizations.
