China has called for international efforts to inject the UN Charter with new dynamism and vitality, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday. Guo made the remarks in response to a media query about China's views on the historical and contemporary significance of the signing of the UN Charter.

"Eighty years ago, the signing of the UN Charter and the founding of the United Nations declared the steadfast commitment of the international community to ending the scourge of war and promoting cooperation, which ushered in a new historical chapter of countries working together for peace and development. Now 80 years on, amidst shifting international dynamics, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter have shown everlasting relevance, becoming the fundamental guidance for handling international relations and a crucial cornerstone for the stability of the international order. On the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter, China calls upon the world to revisit the spirit of the Charter, and more importantly to always put it into action and reinvigorate it," he said.

"As the first country to put its signature on the UN Charter, China has all along strictly followed the norms governing international relations, faithfully fulfilled its international obligations, and made positive contributions to the peace and development of humanity. China stands ready to work with all sides to renew our commitment to the founding mission of the UN, observe the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, practice true multilateralism, jointly strengthen the role of the UN, improve global governance, safeguard international fairness and justice, and create a better future," Guo said.

The closure of Poipet border crossing, the largest land border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia, has left large numbers of people stranded on both sides of the border and unable to return home amid continuing clashes.

At the Thai side of the border on Saturday, security personnel carried out strict checks on all vehicles and people at a distance of about 500 meters from the Poipet crossing, and only those holding Cambodian documents and relevant personnel were allowed access to the area.

"I have been in Thailand for about three to four years, working in a factory. Now the situation at the border is not good, so I want to go back to my hometown," said one of the stranded Cambodian nationals.

Another more than 20 Cambodian nationals failed to go home through the Poipet border crossing on Saturday, and were later picked up by a kind-hearted Thai local, who said that many groups of Cambodians had tried to cross the border every day but failed recently.

"They have no place to sleep, and they would be bitten by mosquitoes if sleeping outdoors, so I want to take them to my place. They just can't go through this checkpoint," said the local.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said at a press conference Saturday that 6,000 to 7,000 Thai nationals were stranded on the Cambodian side of the Poipet border checkpoint.
