Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko in Beijing on Friday.

Before meeting President Xi, Sonoko was in north China's Tianjin Municipality attending the Summer Davos forum which concluded on Thursday.

Last September, Xi said, he co-chaired the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, leading China-Africa relationship into a new phase of jointly building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.

Noting that China and Senegal are companions on the path to development and revitalization as well as good brothers, Xi said China is willing to work with Senegal to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, deepen the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and inject fresh impetus into China-Africa friendship and Global South cooperation. Xi stressed that the two countries should support each other's independent development paths, develop closer exchanges between political parties and deepen experience sharing on state governance. China will work vigorously with Senegal to implement the "Ten Partnership Actions" of FOCAC, advance more projects that benefit the people, and encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in Senegal's new energy and digital infrastructure sectors, thereby forging a win-win partnership.

Xi called on both countries to take the opportunity of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges to deepen interpersonal interactions and strengthen cooperation in culture, education, tourism, sports, youth exchanges, and other fields.

Both sides should firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, practice true multilateralism, embrace a global governance vision featuring extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and jointly promote world peace, prosperity, and progress, he said.

Prime Minister Sonko conveyed greetings from President Faye to Xi. Sonko said China is a reliable partner of Senegal, and cooperation has progressed well in various areas.

Senegal firmly adheres to the one-China principle and looks forward to deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with China, advancing Belt and Road cooperation, and enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, energy, and other fields, he said.

Senegal is ready to cooperate with China in international and regional affairs and safeguarding the common interests of the Global South, Sonko said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine stands ready to agree to security guarantees based on NATO's Article 5 as part of a compromise in the peace process, according to media reports.

"From the very beginning, Ukraine's desire was to join NATO, these are real security guarantees. Some partners from the United States and Europe did not support this direction," the Ukrinform news agency quoted Zelensky.

Zelensky said Article 5-like guarantees from the United States and from European partners, as well as from other countries, "would provide an opportunity to prevent another arrival of Russian troops." He also called it "a compromise on our part."

Zelensky said he was not yet ready to disclose specific details of the proposed security guarantees, saying they would be known in a day or two.

Ukrainian president arrived in Berlin on Sunday afternoon for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders.

German newspaper Bild reported that Zelensky may also hold talks with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump, but did not elaborate further.

According to Ukrinform, Zelensky said the same day that Ukraine must be prepared for any possible developments regarding elections.

"I asked our partners to assist with the security situation if elections are held, and I said that lawmakers should prepare options for how this could be implemented if the situation develops in that direction. They should work out, in the near future, options for holding elections," he said in a statement in response to journalists' questions.

He said he had received "signals" from the United States and President Trump regarding Ukraine's presidential election.
