Another wave of heavy flooding swept the riverside county of Rongjiang in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Saturday afternoon, where a highest-level emergency flood response has been put in place.
Located at the confluence of three rivers, Ronjiang, was already inundated earlier this week by torrential rains, but a large swath of its urban areas was submerged again by floodwater on Saturday.
Fast-flowing water burst the banks of the local Duliu River, which reportedly reached peak flood level at around 17:00.
Many of the county's 385,000 people have been relocated to higher ground after local authorities issued emergency evacuation orders. Many stores in low-lying areas have also been ordered to suspend their business.
More than 1,000 members of the Chinese armed police force arrived in the county at around 18:00 Saturday afternoon, bringing with them large machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, and loaders.
They will assist in the local flood rescue and relief efforts in the coming days.
Rongjiang has been reeling from the impact of persistent rainstorms since Tuesday. As of midday on Thursday, six people had died as a result of the floods.
