China has basically completed the construction of city clusters connected by railways and made breakthrough progress in the construction of the national transportation system, Minister of Transport Liu Wei said on Monday.
"China has basically finished the construction of city clusters connected by railways as well as world-class port clusters and airport clusters. We are filling the gap of transportation infrastructure in the western region of the country at a higher speed. The overall efficiency of the transportation network in China's northeast region is continuously improving," Liu told a press conference in Beijing.
Liu said China's fixed asset investment in transportation reached 15.2 trillion yuan (2.1 trillion U.S. dollars) from 2021 to 2024, the first four years of the country's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) period, increasing by 23.3 percent compared with the previous corresponding period of time.
By the end of 2024, China's railway operational mileage had reached 162,000 kilometers, an increase of 16,000 kilometers over 2020.
Also by the end of 2024, the total mileage of highways and high-level waterways had reached 5.49 million kilometers, up about 290,000 kilometers over 2020, and 17,600 kilometers, up 1,600 kilometers over 2020, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of certified civil aviation transport airports had reached 263, an increase of 22 over the 2020 level, Liu said.

He, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while attending the Canada-China Trade and Investment Banquet together with the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Speaking at the event, He said that under the strategic guidance of the important consensus reached by their leaders, China and Canada should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation, and mutual success, and jointly promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
China is steadfastly expanding high-standard opening up, continuously developing new quality productive forces, and is willing to work with countries around the world, including Canada, to create new prospects for cooperation, said He.
Carney noted at the banquet that China is Canada's second-largest trading partner and said Canada looks forward to strengthening high-level exchanges with China, making full use of dialogue mechanisms in areas such as the economy and trade, and deepening cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy and other fields.
Carney arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to begin a four-day official visit to China, marking the first trip to the country by a Canadian prime minister in eight years.
