Canada should never accept anything that is not right and must fight back, said Canada's Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Thursday in response to the tariffs imposed by U.S.
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order increasing the tariff on Canada from 25 percent to 35 percent, with the higher tariff set to go into effect on Aug. 1, the White House said in a fact sheet.
Ford proposed retaliatory tariffs of 50 percent on U.S. steel and aluminum to protect Canadian workers and businesses.
He stressed that Canada is the largest supplier of energy and minerals of the United States, and urged the federal government, workers, and businesses to stand united and firm in order to build a more competitive and independent economy.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated earlier in July that the Canadian government has steadfastly defended the country's interests in trade negotiations with the United States to secure the best possible agreements for Canada.
Canada is now taking every available measure to support industries affected by tariffs and to keep the Canadian economy on a steady growth path, he said.
Canada was the top buyer of the U.S. exports last year, importing 349 billion dollars worth of goods, while exporting 413 billion dollars to the United States as its third-largest source of foreign goods, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
