Chinese envoy calls for forging broader consensus for political settlement of Ukraine crisis

A Chinese envoy on Friday called for forging broader consensus for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.

Speaking at a UN Security Council emergency meeting, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, said the Ukraine crisis is currently at a critical stage and urged all parties to make greater efforts and work towards the same direction. Geng noted that the conflicting parties should prioritize humanitarianism and civilian protection, abide by international humanitarian law, and avoid attacks on civilians and civil infrastructure.

"In the past seven days, the Security Council has discussed the Ukraine issue three times. While time and effort are spent on these meetings, greater focus should be placed on mediation and advancing peace talks. China will continue to follow the 'four principles' put forth by President Xi Jinping, actively working for peace and pushing for talks. Together with the international community, China is committed to playing a positive and constructive role in achieving a political solution to the Ukraine crisis," said Geng.

He further emphasized that the international community, especially the major stakeholders, should actively promote a ceasefire, advance peace talks, and thereby foster a positive atmosphere, create favorable conditions, and provide necessary assistance to achieve a political resolution.

Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the four principles aimed at preventing the Ukraine crisis from spiraling out of control and restoring peace at an early date.

According to Xi, all parties should prioritize upholding peace and stability and refrain from seeking selfish gains; cool down the situation and avoid adding fuel to the fire; create conditions for the restoration of peace and refrain from further exacerbating tensions; as well as reduce the negative impact on the global economy and refrain from undermining the stability of international industrial and supply chains.

China's commissioning of "five essentials for aircraft carriers" marks a a significant achievement of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s accelerated transformation and development, said Jiang Bin, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, at a press conference in Beijing on Saturday.

The "five essentials" refer to stealth carrier-based fighters, multirole catapult-assisted carrier-based fighters, fixed-wing carrier-based early warning aircraft, fixed-wing electronic warfare aircraft, and anti-submarine helicopters.

"The package, or what media have dubbed the 'five essentials for aircraft carriers,' is a vital link in forming the systematic combat capability of aircraft carrier formations and a significant achievement in the PLA Navy’s accelerated transformation and development. Building a strong PLA Navy embodies the Chinese nation's long-cherished aspiration of striving to be a strong naval power and serves as an important guarantee for realizing national rejuvenation. In the new era, under the firm leadership of the CPC Central Committee, the Central Military Commission and President Xi, the modernization of the PLA Navy has become increasingly solid and powerful. From the air to the sea, from coastal waters to the open ocean, the types and functions of various weapons platforms have been continuously improved, achieving leapfrog development and innovative breakthroughs, providing stronger guarantees for safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests," he said.
