China's box office in August had exceeded two billion yuan (about 274 million U.S. dollars) as of 22:40 on Friday, with "Dead To Rights", a film on Nanjing Massacre, taking the lead, according to data from online ticketing platforms.
The film centers on a group of Chinese civilians who take refuge in a photography studio during the Japanese aggressors' brutal occupation of Nanjing.
It grossed more than 1.5 billion yuan within just 10 days after being released.
The animated feature "Nobody", which blends traditional painting styles with modern storytelling in an adaptation of the classic "Journey to the West", ranked second, followed by the comedy-drama "The Stage" in third place.
Another highly anticipated historical war drama "Dongji Rescue" made a strong debut on Friday, raking in approximately 350 million yuan at the box office on its opening day.
Inspired by the 1942 Dongji Island rescue incident, the film sheds light on an overlooked chapter of history through the lens of ordinary Chinese fishermen.
In addition, the documentary film "Mountains and Rivers Bearing Witness" is set to hit cinema screens across China in August, offering a comprehensive and panoramic portrayal of the Chinese people's arduous journey in their war of resistance against Japanese aggression.
The Chinese historical drama titled "731", which revisits the horrific World War II-era human experiments conducted by Japan's notorious germ warfare unit 731, is scheduled to premiere on September 18.
