The upcoming 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit is expected to adopt a series of political and economic documents, and a joint statement on the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II and the founding of the United Nations, said Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev when he shared highlights of the event.

The SCO Summit 2025 will be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.

With leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations to attend, the summit will be the largest one since the establishment of the organization.

Speaking with China Media Group (CMG) in an exclusive interview released on Friday, Yermekbayev shared expectations on the summit.

"Indeed, in less than a month, the Council of Heads of State of the SCO will hold its annual meeting in Tianjin, a core event of the year. The summit will bring together not only the heads of state and government of the SCO member states, but also important guests such as leaders of SCO observer states, dialogue partners, and heads of international organizations. As is customary, the heads of state and government will review the achievements of cooperation over the past year, jointly chart future developments, exchange in-depth views and coordinate positions on international hotspots and multilateral cooperation issues, and formulate unified response plans," he said.

Yermekbayev stressed that a series of important political and economic documents are set to be adopted during the event.

"This summit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The upcoming summit is expected to adopt a series of important political and economic documents, foremost among which is the Tianjin Declaration, which will reflect the positions of the leaders of the member states on international hotspots and developments in various fields, including politics, security, and the economy. Another important outcome document is the SCO's 10-year development strategy, which will be formulated at the summit. We will develop a 10-year development strategy towards 2035, which will reflect the SCO's priorities for the next decade. Furthermore, we expect the summit to adopt a series of important documents and resolutions, including a statement by the leaders of the member states on the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II, as well as key resolutions covering a wide range of areas, including energy, digital economy, industrialization, green industries, and multilateral trading system. Statements and resolutions will also address contemporary challenges and threats, and of course, issues related to the SCO's international positioning and international relations," said the secretary-general.

Yermekbayev highlighted that the upcoming summit is also expected to adopt a joint statement by member state leaders on the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II and the founding of the United Nations, as part of efforts to uphold the post-war international order and the authority of the UN.

"This year is indeed a year of great commemorative significance. On this occasion, the SCO member states have held numerous commemorative events. All member states agree that we must remember history, draw lessons from it, and forge the future. As the ancient Chinese saying goes, 'by learning from history, we can understand why powers rise and fall'. The SCO attaches great importance to these commemorative activities. Member states deeply cherish the memory of their predecessors, and the upcoming Tianjin Summit is expected to adopt a joint statement by member state leaders on the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II and the founding of the United Nations," he noted.

Established 24 years ago by China and its five neighboring countries, the SCO now has 10 member states, two observer states and 14 dialogue partners from Asia, Europe and Africa. It has grown into a regional cooperation organization with the largest population and geographic coverage, as well as the greatest development potential.
