China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated at a press briefing on Tuesday that head-of-state diplomacy plays a strategic guidance role in China-U.S. relations.
Guo was responding to a media query that U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he expects to visit China this year or shortly afterwards. Guo reiterated China's position on the bilateral relations with the U.S.
"China always handles and develops its relations with the U.S. in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, while firmly safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests. We hope the U.S. will work with China in the same direction and promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of the bilateral relations. Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guidance role in China-U.S. relations. The Chinese and U.S. presidents maintain close exchanges and communication," said Guo at the press conference in Beijing.
