Russian troops controlled the community of Pervoye Maya in the Donetsk region and caused heavy casualties on Ukrainian troops in multiple directions over the past 24 hours, Russia's Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday, while Ukraine said on the same day that it downed dozens of Russian drones.

During the past 24 hours, Russian troops inflicted heavy casualties on Ukrainian troops in the directions including Sumy, Kharkov, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, and Dnepropetrovsk, said the Russian Defense Ministry, noting that Russian operational/tactical aircraft, attacking drones, missile troops and artillery struck a Ukrainian air defense radar, as well as control posts and assembly sites of drones.

Russian troops also attacked temporary deployment areas of Ukrainian armed forces and foreign mercenaries in 149 locations, the ministry said, while Russian air defense systems shot down 162 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles and several smart bombs over the past 24 hours.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Wednesday that Ukrainian aviation, missile forces and artillery hit six concentration areas of Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment, three artillery systems and one important facility over the past day.

According to the General Staff, Russia carried out large-scale attacks on the electricity and gas infrastructure in six regions and caused power outages in most areas of Sumy over the past 24 hours.

Over the past day, Ukrainian air force, missile force, and electronic warfare troops and maneuvering firepower units shot down 74 Russian drones of various types in northern, eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.

The multilateral system is "under attack" amid global turmoil, President of the 80th UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock warned in her remarks on Wednesday.

In her briefing on the priorities for the resumed 80th Session of the General Assembly, the UNGA president noted that the current multilateral system does not collapse all in a sudden, but "crumbles piece by piece" in divisions, compromises, and lack of political commitment.

The president called all the UN member states to defend the UN Charter and international law and promote cross-regional cooperation.

She also urged to push forward the work of the UNGA on certain critical issues with a strong majority, rather than an absolute consensus among all member states. Such act is not a failure of multilateralism, but "an affirmation of it," she said.

The foundational principles of the institution should not be eroded by appeasement, she said, calling the member states to show courage, leadership, and responsibility at the UN's "critical make-or-break moment."

"The UN needs you. Your support, your leadership, your principle, stand, your cross-regional cooperation, if we are to preserve and modernize this institution, if we are to make it, rather than break it," she said.
