The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) plays a vital role in advancing world peace, security, and multilateral cooperation, said Ambassador of Iran to China Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.
Fazli offered these comments on the eve of the 2025 SCO Summit, which is scheduled to take place on August 31 and September 1. The summit will be the largest gathering in the SCO's history, with more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organizations expected to attend.
"The SCO is a regional organization dedicated to multilateralism. Its core values can be described in three words: cooperation, mutual respect, and sustainable development. These values, advocated and practiced by the SCO, can promote world peace, security, and multilateral cooperation. When faced with challenges such as unilateralism, the SCO has clearly expressed its position, issued condemnations in international and regional organizations such as the UN Security Council, and taken appropriate measures to actively leverage its influence," said Fazli.
Since gaining full membership in the SCO in July 2023, Iran has actively participated in the group and achieved fruitful results from cooperation across various fields within the framework.
"Since officially becoming a member of the SCO in 2023, Iran has cooperated with relevant countries within the SCO framework in areas such as cross-border transport, economy, and security, achieving remarkable results. Iran firmly believes in the value of collective cooperation and mutual respect, and guided by this philosophy, has actively participated in all relevant SCO committee and subcommittee meetings. Iranian officials, ministers, and heads of relevant administrative agencies have participated in these meetings and put forward practical initiatives, many of which have been adopted by the SCO," the ambassador said.
He also spoke highly of the work accomplished by China in its role as the rotating president.
"Guided by the initiatives and concepts proposed by President Xi Jinping, China has remained a steadfast practitioner of multilateralism, common cooperation, and development. As this year's rotating chair of the SCO, China's efforts will further propel the SCO forward. Over the past year, China has hosted over 100 events, attended by senior officials from many member states, and reached numerous important consensuses. Under China's leadership and influence, member states have also jointly designed, planned, and implemented numerous action plans, further elevating the Shanghai Spirit during this period. Through institutional development and a spirit of mutual respect, member states are able to engage in in-depth collaboration, and these achievements are entirely attributable to the tremendous efforts of China, the rotating chair," he said.
