China and Africa, as important members of the Global South, must shoulder the historic responsibility of upholding international fairness and justice, safeguarding world peace, and promoting common development, said President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

Xi made the statement during a meeting with President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso in Beijing, where they jointly announced upgrading bilateral ties to a high-level community with a shared future.

Sassou Nguesso is in China for commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

"I'm glad to meet you in Beijing again, my old friend Mr. President Sassou. This year marks the 80th founding anniversary of the United Nations. At present, the international situation is fraught with complex changes and turmoil. China and Africa, as important members of the Global South, need to shoulder the historic responsibility of upholding international fairness and justice, safeguarding world peace, and promoting common development, and join hands to promote the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. The relationship between China and the Republic of the Congo stands as a model of China-Africa friendship. I propose that we upgrade the bilateral ties to a high-level community with a shared future, in efforts to work together to advance the building of an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era," said Xi.

"President Xi Jinping, my dear friend, the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War is a historic event that enables us to remember the martyrs and display the values of resilience and peace. It bears on consolidating peace and safeguarding the future, as well as the path towards China's national rejuvenation, and the inspirations from the process for greater contributions to the cause of development," said Sassou Nguesso.
