The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by a overwhelming majority on strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Friday.
The draft resolution was jointly proposed by China and other countries.
The resolution acknowledges the constructive role of the SCO in ensuring peace and sustainable development, promoting regional cooperation, and enhancing good-neighborly relations and mutual trust.
It emphasizes the importance of strengthening dialogue, cooperation and coordination between the United Nations system and the SCO.
The resolution proposes that the UN secretary-general maintain regular consultations with the SCO secretary-general through existing inter-agency forums and mechanisms, including high-level interactive dialogues between the UN secretary-general and the heads of regional and other organizations.
It also recommends that specialized agencies, organizations, programs and funds within the UN system collaborate with the SCO to jointly implement relevant programs aimed at achieving shared objectives.
Geng Shuang, Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, said at the meeting that over the past 24 years since its establishment, the SCO has continuously grown and developed under the guidance of the "Shanghai Spirit", and has now become the world's largest regional organization.
Geng said the most prominent feature of the SCO Tianjin Summit was the Global Governance Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which has been warmly welcomed and positively responded to by all parties.
Geng also called on the United Nations and the SCO to further enhance cooperation.
"The United Nations was one of the key words of this year’s [SCO] Tianjin Summit. The declaration [issued at the summit] mentioned the United Nations as many as 40 times, clearly emphasizing that the SCO will uphold the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, facilitate the United Nations to play its central coordinating role, implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals, support necessary reforms of the United Nations, and expand exchanges and cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the summit also issued a special statement, calling for the safeguarding of the international system with the United Nations at its core. Secretary-General (Antonio) Guterres attended the Tianjin Summit and positively evaluated the efforts made by the SCO to support the cause of the United Nations," said Geng.
At the meeting, representatives from many countries, including Russia, Pakistan and Serbia, spoke highly of the SCO Tianjin Summit and the work done by China during its tenure as the rotating presidency, emphasizing that the adoption of the resolution with a overwhelming majority demonstrates the recognition and support of the international community for the SCO.
Founded in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has expanded from six founding members into a 26-nation family of 10 members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.
The SCO Tianjin summit was held from Aug 31 to Sept 1.
