Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote address at China's V-Day parade as a powerful affirmation of China's global leadership and unwavering commitment to preserving truth amid mounting efforts to distort history.

China staged a grand military parade in Beijing on Wednesday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the broader World Anti-Fascist War, with President Xi Jinping reviewing the troops and presiding over the event.

In an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) following the commemorations, Diaz-Canel said Xi's speech offered profound theoretical insights and laid out a compelling vision for global governance rooted in multilateralism, equality, and respect for the UN Charter.

"General secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech with profound theoretical connotations, systematically expounding a series of concepts. These concepts fully reflect the grand vision of the world's operating mechanism, the global governance model, and how all countries can jointly strive to build a community with a shared future that abandons hegemonism, opposes unilateral sanctions, and provides an equal space for all. In this community, unity, cooperation and multilateralism take the leading position and the UN Charter is strictly followed. I firmly believe that this demonstrates China's leading position in international relations," said Diaz-Canel.

Diaz-Canel voiced strong support for China's stance on historical remembrance, saying the resolute efforts by the Communist Party of China to defend truth in the face of rising distortion are both timely and deeply inspiring.

"I am deeply inspired by the efforts of the Communist Party of China to resolutely safeguard historical memory. At this critical juncture, some major Western powers, especially those that pursue hegemony and attempt to manipulate the world, are trying to rewrite, distort and manipulate history. The commemorative event on Sept 3 highlighted the significance of the tremendous sacrifices and tenacious resistance made by the Chinese people in the fight against Japanese aggression, as well as China's important contributions to the global anti-fascist struggle. On the international stage, China is committed to preventing the recurrence of historical tragedies and calls for drawing lessons from history," he said.

A Japanese lawmaker has raised concerns over Japan's push to expand its military and its nuclear policy.

Responding to some politicians' dangerous tendency towards possessing nuclear weapons, Takara Sachika, a member of Japan's House of Councilors, said that Japan's push to strengthen its military, combined with what she called a misguided nuclear policy, not only heightens regional tensions but also directly threatens regional security.

"I think this is completely unacceptable. Japan is a country that has suffered atomic bombings and is one of the nations most aware of the threat posed by nuclear weapons. Yet such a country is openly discussing the issue of possessing nuclear weapons and even attempting to revise the principle of not allowing the introduction of nuclear weapons, one of the Three Non-Nuclear Principles. This is an extremely serious problem," Takara said.

Takara said the Japanese government's tendency to expand its military capabilities is completely contrary to the Constitution.

"From the perspective of Japan's Constitution, Japan should never have adopted a policy of ensuring security by strengthening military capabilities. Yet today, enormous effort is being poured into military expansion, and that in itself is a serious problem," said the lawmaker.

At a Diet meeting in early November 2025, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that what she described as the Chinese central authorities' "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, and suggested the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait, drawing strong criticism worldwide.

Takara urged Takaichi to retract her erroneous remarks as soon as possible.

"I think there is a very big problem with making such remarks that provoke other countries. It is necessary to thoroughly examine the facts as soon as possible and withdraw the relevant remarks," she said.
