SEATTLE (AP) — As much as the Seattle Seahawks struggled to run the ball or spread it around through the air in a season-opening loss to San Francisco, they had no such challenges in Week 2.
The Seahawks finished with 395 yards of offense in Sunday's 31-17 win at Pittsburgh. Kenneth Walker III eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the first time since the 2024 season opener, and five players caught at least two passes.
“This offense is designed to get everybody the ball,” coach Mike Macdonald said. “And I felt like it did that (Sunday). And we’re on our way on that front.”
Sam Darnold threw two interceptions but bounced back and with a solid performance, finishing with 295 yards passing and two touchdowns. Darnold got veteran receiver Cooper Kupp involved after he was limited to two catches against the 49ers. Kupp had seven catches for 90 yards to complement top receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who exceeded 100 yards for the second straight game.
“We put ourselves in good positions on first and second down to get us into good third downs, third and manageable,” Darnold said. “And we converted a lot of those third downs.”
To Darnold’s point, the Seahawks converted 6 of 14 third downs after going 3 for 10 against the 49ers. Seattle’s commitment to establishing the run paid off in the second half, when the Seahawks scored 24 of their 31 points.
Rather than slip to their first 0-2 start since 2018, the Seahawks found a way on the road.
“It was just a great team win,” Darnold said.
The secondary. Safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Derion Kendrick intercepted Aaron Rodgers on Sunday, and the Seahawks are tied for the third-most takeaways in the league.
The Seahawks recorded three sacks on Sunday, including 1 1/2 from defensive lineman Byron Murphy II, but they are still just 22nd in the league in team sacks.
Rookie wide receiver Tory Horton, a fifth-round draft pick, caught his first two passes, including a touchdown in the first quarter.
Cornerback Riq Woolen, who had what Macdonald called a “rough week” leading up to Sunday’s game, committed an early holding penalty. However, he helped to keep former Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf in check.
Macdonald said Monday that he is “optimistic” about safety Nick Emmanwori (high ankle sprain) and Devon Witherspoon (knee) playing against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. He would prefer if Emmanwori and Witherspoon could practice this week before suiting up.
295 — Days since the Seahawks won a game at Lumen Field. Seattle beat the Arizona Cardinals 16-6 on Nov. 24, 2024.
The Seahawks return home, where they went just 3-6 last season, to host the rebuilding Saints (0-2).

CLEVELAND (AP) — Angel Martinez homered and Cleveland’s pitchers struck out 13 as the Guardians kept up their home mastery of the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night.
Martinez, Patrick Bailey and Bryan Rocchio drove in runs for Cleveland, which improved to 29-4 against the Angels at Progressive Field since 2015. The Guardians have won the first two games in the series despite being outhit twice.
Vaughn Grissom homered for the Angels, who dropped to 8-17 on the road.
YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 2
BALTIMORE (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered on the first pitch of the game, Trent Grisham hit a three-run shot and New York beat Baltimore to end a four-game losing streak.
Will Warren (5-1) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Yankees. It was a bounce-back performance by the right-hander, who yielded six runs over four innings to Texas in his previous start.
Goldschmidt’s fourth career leadoff homer and second in four days put New York in front for good, and Grisham’s drive made it 6-0 in the third. Both home runs came off lefty Trevor Rogers, who lasted only four innings in his return from the injured list following an extended illness.
Pitching for the first time since April 25, Rogers (2-4) gave up six runs and six hits, raising his ERA to 5.77 compared to 1.81 in 2025.
PIRATES 3, ROCKIES 1
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes allowed two hits over eight masterful innings to help Pittsburgh topple Colorado.
The reigning National League Cy Young winner carried a no-hitter into the seventh while retiring 18 of the first 19 batters he faced. Colorado’s Mickey Moniak broke up the no-hit bid when he dumped a single into left-center field with one out in the seventh. Skenes (6-2) retired Hunter Goodman and TJ Rumfield to end the threat.
Skenes returned for the eighth, giving up a one-out double to Troy Johnston before getting a flyout and a ground ball. The 23-year-old received a standing ovation on his way back to the dugout after throwing out Ezequiel Tovar to end the eighth. Skenes tipped his cap before making his way down the dugout steps after finishing with a season-high 10 strikeouts and lowering his ERA to 1.98.
Oneil Cruz had three hits for the Pirates. Nick Gonzales added two hits, including an RBI-single off Michael Lorenzen (2-5) in the first that gave Skenes all the offense he would need.
PHILLIES 2, RED SOX 1
BOSTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber tied a Phillies record by homering for the fifth consecutive game, hitting his major league-high 17th to lead Philadelphia Boston and give Don Mattingly his 900th managerial win.
Philadelphia (20-22) has won three straight and six of eight, improving to 11-3 since Mattingly took over as manager from Ron Thomson on April 28.
Zach Wheeler (2-0) gave up one run and six hits in 7 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Schwarber has six homers in his last five games. He joined Bobby Abreu, Dick Allen, Odúbel Herrera, Rhys Hoskins, Mike Schmidt, Trea Turner and Chase Utley as Phillies homering in five games in a row.
BRAVES 5, CUBS 2
ATLANTA (AP) — Grant Holmes combined with three relievers on a one-hitter, Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski homered and Atlanta beat Chicago in the opener of a three-game set between the National League’s top teams.
Didier Fuentes (2-0) worked three scoreless innings in relief of Holmes, who had not pitched since May 1. Atlanta’s starter worked four innings, allowing a solo homer to Alex Bregman and an RBI grounder by Moisés Ballesteros. He walked four and struck out five while throwing 78 pitches.
Dylan Lee pitched a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his seventh save. Iglesias has not allowed a run over 11 2/3 innings this season.
Yastrzemski was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, including his two-run homer in the fifth inning that landed in front of the Chop House restaurant in right field. Earlier in the inning, Riley hit a solo shot 409 feet to left field that tied it at 2-all.
NATIONALS 10, REDS 4
CINCINNATI (AP) — James Wood hit his 12th home run of the season, and Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile each went deep twice as part of a six-homer night by Washington in a win over Cincinnati.
Brady House also homered for the Nationals, who improved to 14-9 on the road. That’s the second-most road wins in the majors behind Atlanta’s 16.
Lile and García became the sixth pair of Nationals players to homer twice in the same game. The last were Brian Dozier and Juan Soto on Aug. 18, 2019.
Washington has 50 homers this season and surpassed its previous high of four in a game, set on May 6 in a win over Minnesota.
Reds starter Brady Singer was struck on the right foot by a line drive off the bat of Lile in the second inning but remained in the game after being assessed by training staff. He later had an X-ray that came back clean, the team said.
TWINS 3, MARLINS 0
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Bailey Ober threw a two-hitter for his first career shutout, leading Minnesota to a victory over Miami in their series opener.
Byron Buxton stole home and Ryan Jeffers hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who have won three straight games.
Ober (4-2) threw 89 pitches in his third career complete game. He struck out seven, walked none and didn’t allow a hit after the fourth.
Eury Pérez (2-5) didn’t allow a hit until the fifth, when Trevor Larnach’s single moved Buxton to third to set up the double-steal.
BREWERS 6, PADRES 4
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Ortiz homered for the first time in nearly 10 months and drove in two runs as Milwaukee beat San Diego for their fifth straight victory.
Brandon Sproat (1-2) struck out six and allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings to pick up his first career victory.
San Diego’s Miguel Andjuar produced a solo shot in the sixth and hit an RBI double off the tip of center fielder Garrett Mitchell’s glove in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-4.
Abner Uribe worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to earn his fourth save in five opportunities.
METS 10, TIGERS 2
NEW YORK (AP) — A.J. Ewing gave the Mets just the offensive jolt they were looking for throughout his impressive major league debut, and Freddy Peralta pitched six effective innings in New York’s victory over Detroit.
Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez doubled in the fourth and scored on Carson Benge’s tiebreaking single, but was removed in the sixth after hitting a foul ball. Late in the game, the Mets announced Alvarez has a right knee injury and will undergo imaging Wednesday.
New York, which entered with the worst record in the majors at 15-25, is already missing three injured regulars: shortstop Francisco Lindor, first baseman Jorge Polanco and center fielder Luis Robert Jr.
CARDINALS 6, ATHLETICS 4
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run homer, José Fermín drove in two with a double and St. Louis beat the Athletics 6-4.
The Cardinals snapped a two-game skid and improved their major league-best road record to 14-7. They have yet to lose three straight road games this season.
Andre Pallante (4-3) struck out four and allowed four hits and three runs in five innings. Four relievers followed, with Riley O’Brien working around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his 12th save.
GIANTS 6, DODGERS 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Harrison Bader and Eric Haase homered back-to-back for the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth inning, and San Francisco beat Los Angeles.
Haase tied the game with a solo shot in the third — his first homer since May 7, 2025. He nearly went deep a third time in the seventh when Andy Pages caught Haase’s long drive at the center field wall. Bader’s two-strike homer was his first since March 30 and tied the game before Haase went deep again for a 3-2 lead.
It was the first time Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto (3-3) gave up three homers in a game. All three came from the eighth and ninth spots in the Giants’ lineup with two outs.
Shohei Ohtani homered for the first time since April 26 for the Dodgers.
