Amid the smoke, rubble and constant shelling in the war-torn Gaza Strip, journalists continue to hold their posts, risking their lives to keep the truth alive.
With cameras in hand and words as their tools, they navigate destroyed streets and use the limited resources to document the human reality behind the the latest round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict that broke out on October 7, 2023. Despite danger, exhaustion and possible loss of their lives, these reporters remain steadfast -- determined to ensure Gaza's voice is heard by the world.
These few temporary tents have become a shared "warzone newsroom" for Gaza's journalists.
Under continuous Israeli bombardment, what served as their official news institutions and offices have been reduced to rubble.
To keep reporting, journalists often struggle to find power or an internet signal for a single laptop or camera -- basic tools that have become scarce luxuries. In such desperate conditions, these "journalist tents" have emerged.
Powered by a few small generators and limited network equipment, the tents provide the precious electricity and connectivity that allow Gaza's reporters to keep working amid the chaos and to let the world know what Gaza is going through.
"In fact, Palestinian journalists in Gaza City are facing a major crisis and multiple risks. Because of Israel's ongoing attacks, they encounter extreme difficulties in daily work — restricted movement, disrupted communications and the Internet, and constant threats of targeted strikes. They cannot move freely, and these are the real dangers they face every single day," said Ahed Farwana, secretary-general of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate.
Beyond the struggle for survival lies an even heavier psychological burden.
The title of "journalist" offers no protection -- instead, it often puts them in greater danger.
According to Gaza's media office, from October 7, 2023 to October 1 this year, 254 media workers were killed.
Facing constant threats, many journalists admit to feeling fear, but it is their sense of duty and mission that drives them to keep pressing the shutter and raising the microphone amid the ruins.
"Personally, since October 7, 2023, I haven't rested for even an hour. I've stayed on the job the entire time. I don't expect anyone's thanks or any reward. I just want our voices to reach the world — to let people know that we, as journalists, work tirelessly and truthfully show what Palestinian reporters are going through. Like all Palestinians, we face the risk of being destroyed and erased by Israel," said Mohammed Abu Namous, a Palestinian journalist.
"I will stay on in Gaza City until the very last moment. Even if I'm attacked or forcibly arrested by Israeli forces, I will remain here," said Youssef Saoudi, another Palestinian journalist.
