China has consolidated its status as the world's largest trader, producer and consumer of major forest products with total output value of its forestry and grassland industry exceeding 10 trillion yuan (about 1.41 trillion U.S. dollars), according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

As China's reform of the collective forest tenure system advances steadily, various regions have introduced multiple measures to further revitalize forest resources.

Fujian Province in east China, which leads in the country in forest coverage, has piloted reforms focused on "benefits for multiple parties, diversified operations, and multi-level services" to improve productivity.

By coordinating effective market forces and proactive government action, the output value of Fujian's forestry industry totaled 812.1 billion yuan (about 114.2 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024, ranking the first in the country.

During its forestry reforms, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has prioritized green finance as a key approach, channeling financial resources into forestry industry development.

Since the beginning of 2025, 11.2 billion yuan (about 1.56 billion U.S. dollars) in outstanding forest tenure mortgage loans have been deployed to support the forestry sector.

"What is noteworthy particularly is that specialized forestry bank branches have been established in some of our subdistricts, enabling forestry financial products to better drive industrial development. This helps the industry build up its foundation and gain fresh vitality, generates income for people, and allows enterprises to develop flexibly," said Jiang Chengmin, deputy director of Chongqing Forestry Bureau.

In east China's Zhejiang Province, collective forest land constitutes over 95 percent of total forest area.

In 2024, Zhejiang pioneered a pilot program to establish shared forestry service centers. By integrating resources and providing professional technical services, these centers address challenges in resource utilization, technology application, and service coverage previously caused by fragmented operations.

"Various localities have developed tailored supporting measures for the separation of collective forestland ownership, contract, and management rights, forest resource management, forestry-grassland industry development, and forestry financial services. These efforts aim to expand, strengthen, and optimize the forestry-grassland industry, whose annual output value has now exceeded 10 trillion yuan," said Wu Baihai, deputy director of the department of reform and development under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

Director of the 2025 China Media Group (CMG) Spring Festival Gala Yu Lei took part in the torch relay for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in Rome on Saturday.

The relay began at the Stadio dei Marmi on Saturday morning, marking the start of a two-month journey ahead of next year's opening ceremony.

"In 2022, I was very fortunate to be part of the core creative team for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The experience, especially witnessing the Milan-Cortina eight-minute presentation at the closing ceremony, is still vivid in my memory. It was broadcast worldwide through CMG. Being here in Rome today for the torch relay, I hope the Olympic spirit and the brilliance of the Winter Olympics will continue from Beijing to Milan," Yu said.

The opening leg of the torch relay began at Rome's Stadio dei Marmi and stretched about 30 kilometers, passing several historic landmarks.

Locals lined the streets to witness the event, proudly celebrating Rome's role in carrying forward the Olympic flame.

"I like it (the torch relay). Rome is an international metropolis that can host all these types of events," said Antonio, an Italian spectator.

The torch will traverse 12,000 kilometers over 60 days across Italy, passing through more than 300 municipalities, featuring celebrations in 60 cities, reaching all 110 Italian provinces, and lighting up UNESCO sites along the route.

More than 10,000 torchbearers from all walks of life will take part in the journey, including figures from the worlds of sports, culture, film, and civil society.

The relay will conclude on February 6 at Milan's San Siro Stadium.
