Media leaders from across the globe urged strengthened cooperation among Global South countries at the Global South Media Partners Mechanism Inauguration Meeting and the 13th Global Video Media Forum (VMF) in northwest China's Xi'an on Thursday.

Themed "Building Consensus for Shared Benefits: Media's Role in Global Governance," the ongoing two-day event has gathered hundreds of government officials, leaders of international organizations, and representatives of major media outlets across the Global South. The aim is to exchange views on enhancing the voice of developing countries, promoting fairness and equity in international communication, and sharing compelling stories of peace and development.

Nguyen Thanh Lam, president of Vietnam Television, said in a speech during the event that the new mechanism will help the Global South take a more prominent position in the global media landscape. "Therefore, the initiative to create the platform for dialogue and cooperation among media organizations is extremely meaningful. It helps build a more inclusive and diverse global media environment, protects the voices and interests of developing countries, respects diversity, promotes development, and fosters solidarity," Nguyen said.

Mederbek Shermetaliev, director of the Kyrgyz National Kabar News Agency, hailed the new mechanism as an amplifier for voices from the Global South.

"We highly appreciate the Global South Media Partners Mechanism. Kyrgyzstan believes this mechanism is an important tool for realizing a balanced global media landscape as it advocates that the voice of every country should be heard by the world," Shermetaliev said.

Jorge Luis Palenque, CEO and general director of Popular Radio and Television of Bolivia, emphasized that China's vision of openness and shared development encourages Global South media to work together toward a more cooperative and human-centered communication model.

"This meeting makes us reconsider the role of media organizations in the Global South as a responsible actor in jointly building a more balanced communication governance system to have technologies serving the truth and human progress," he said.

The VMF is an annual professional journalism forum launched by the CCTV Video News Agency (CCTV+) of the China Media Group back in 2011, focusing on the latest video content communication and innovation trends, and providing a highly specialized and interactive platform for domestic and foreign media peers.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he is considering "winding down" the U.S. military strikes against Iran, claiming the United States is "getting very close to" meeting its objectives.

"We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East" with respect to Iran, Trump said on Truth Social.

The objectives Trump outlined include degrading Iran's missile capabilities, destroying its defense industrial base, eliminating its navy and air force, preventing it from ever approaching nuclear capability and protecting U.S. allies across the region.

Also on Friday, Trump said that he does not want a ceasefire with Iran.

"We can have dialogue, but you know, I don't want to do a ceasefire," Trump told reporters before he departed the White House for Florida, noting "You don't do a ceasefire when you're literally obliterating the other side."

"U.S. government says one thing, reality says another," Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Friday on X, questioning White House's repeated claims that Iran's air defenses and Navy have been destroyed.

Trump on Truth Social also said that the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy waterway, should be secured by the countries that rely on it and Washington would assist if asked.

"The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it -- The United States does not! If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn't be necessary once Iran's threat is eradicated," Trump added.

The United States and Israel launched joint military strikes on Iran on Feb 28, disrupting global shipping, sending oil prices soaring and shaking the global economy.
