China urges the United States to lift the blockade and sanctions on Cuba, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press briefing on Thursday.

On a visit to Cuba earlier this month, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Alena Douhan, called on the United States to lift its long-standing sanctions, which have brought a further deterioration of all sectors in the Caribbean nation, and violate a broad number of international legal norms.

"We have noted the relevant information. The report is fully consistent with the UN General Assembly's overwhelming vote once again demanding an end to the U.S. blockade on Cuba. China has always opposed the U.S. blockade and sanctions against Cuba. We urge the United States to heed the just call of the international community, immediately lift the blockade and sanctions, and remove Cuba from the list of 'state sponsors of terrorism'," Guo said in response to a media inquiry on China's position on the issue.
