China's value-added industrial output, an important economic indicator and measure of productivity, expanded 5.9 percent year on year in 2025, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said at a press conference in Beijing on Monday.

Kang Yi, head of the NBS, said that industrial production saw good momentum of growth, particularly in the equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing sectors.

The bureau's analysis hones in on "enterprises above the designated size," referring to companies whose annual main business revenue reaches at least 20 million yuan (around 2.87 million U.S. dollars).

"In 2025, the total value added of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased 5.9 percent over the previous year. By sector, the value added of mining was up 5.6 percent, that of manufacturing up 6.4 percent and that of production and supply of electricity, thermal power, gas and water were up 2.3 percent. The value added of equipment manufacturing went up 9.2 percent, and that of high-tech manufacturing up 9.4 percent, 3.3 percentage points and 3.5 percentage points faster than that of the whole industrial enterprises above the designated size, respectively," said Kang.

The official also released data on value-added industrial output categorized by ownership and key product types.

"In terms of ownership, the value added of the state-holding enterprises grew 4.6 percent, that of the share-holding enterprises was up 6.3 percent, that of the enterprises funded by foreign investors and investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan increased 3.9 percent and that of private enterprises was up 5.3 percent. By products, the production of 3D printing equipment, industrial robots, and new energy vehicles grew by 52.5 percent, 28 percent and 25.1 percent, respectively," he said.

Kang also noted that in December, the total value added of the industrial enterprises above the designated size rose by 5.2 percent over the previous year and 0.49 percent over the previous month.

The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector stood at 50.1 in December, up 0.9 percentage points from November, while the business activity expectation index was at 55.5, an increase of 2.4 percentage points.

For the first 11 months of 2025, the nationwide industrial enterprises above the designated size reported a total profit of 6.63 trillion yuan (about 952 billion U.S. dollars), up 0.1 percent year on year, said the official.
