Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned Ukraine's accession to NATO will create the constant threat of a military conflict.
Speaking on Saturday at a meeting of Hungary's ruling party, Orban reiterated Ukraine's critical role as a buffer zone for Europe's stability and ending the conflict, and called for its return to neutrality.
Orban said that Ukraine previously acted as a buffer zone between Russia and the Western world for 30 years. But a shift occurred when Western countries, including the United States, and Ukraine decided to change this dynamic. Instead of remaining a buffer, Ukraine aimed to integrate into the Western security system. This change left Russia feeling threatened, as it perceived NATO's expansion as moving directly toward its borders.
Russia had warned that Ukraine's ongoing efforts to join NATO would lead to war, which is exactly what happened, Orban said.
"As a result, there is a need for a buffer zone between Russia and the West, namely up to Hungary’s eastern border. It is crucial that a consensus is reached on how Ukraine can restore its role as a buffer zone; otherwise, the war may continue indefinitely," said the prime minister.
