A deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), who has been dedicated to promoting patriotic education, plans to make proposals during this year's "two sessions" to help confirm the identities of nameless martyrs and enable the remains of these heroes to return to their hometowns.
Li Junjie, from the Chinese People's Armed Police (PAP) Force Shanxi Corps, has always explored ways to make patriotic education more impressive and effective.
With his efforts, the PAP Shanxi Corps, in cooperation with Shijiazhuang Military Procuratorate and local elementary schools, launched a campaign to carry forward the spirit of heroes and protect memorial facilities.
"We led teenagers to get close to heroes, learn about the heroic stories behind those shining names, and protect the memorial facilities for martyrs. We will remember the dedication of the martyrs, protect their glory, and carry forward their spirit," said Li.
Last year, Li submitted proposals on improving the military-civilian cooperation system for patriotic education and improving the mechanism for the protection and management of statues of martyrs.
These proposals received active response from relevant departments. Shijiazhuang Military Procuratorate has established a mechanism to collect clues about vandalism, with the support of local troops and schools. Last year, more than 50 memorial facilities for martyrs were protected and renovated.
Li has also devoted significant efforts to helping unidentified martyrs reconnect with their families. Li has made various field trips, even deep into mountains, to search for clues about the Eighth Route Army martyrs. In January this year, through DNA identification, the remains of three martyrs in Licheng County of Shanxi Province were identified. They were then escorted back to their hometowns in Sichuan and Hebei respectively.
"Finding the relatives of martyrs is a race against time. During this year's 'two sessions,' I plan to make a proposal on advancing efforts in identity identification for martyrs. I hope to help more martyrs 'reunite' with their families as soon as possible by establishing and improving the supporting systems for the search for their relatives, setting up information identification centers for martyrs in different regions, and improving the national DNA database for heroes and martyrs," said Li.
The "two sessions" are the annual meetings of China's top legislature, the NPC, and the top political advisory body, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which will open on March 5 and March 4 in Beijing this year, respectively.
